Nearly Two Weeks Without Power Leaves Indiana City in Frustration and Disarray

GARY, Indiana / RankWire.AI / — More than fourteen days after a severe weather event struck Northwest Indiana, thousands of Lake County residents remain in the dark. The extensive power outage follows a derecho on August 11 that brought peak wind gusts of 99 miles per hour. This storm toppled hundreds of utility poles and cut off numerous distribution lines, causing widespread infrastructure damage. Community advocates and local officials have criticized the sluggish recovery efforts. The situation has become an unacceptable scenario for a US city without power for nearly 2 weeks, fueling mounting frustration among those affected.

Damaged electric infrastructure and downed power lines block municipal roads after severe weather.

Northern Indiana Public Service Co. (NIPSCO), the regional utility provider, reported that this storm caused the most severe and complex damage in its history. Initially, more than 300,000 customers lost service. Although crews managed to restore power to most affected areas, Gary remained the hardest-hit community. Nearly 20,000 residents there were still without electricity late into the second week of recovery. Company officials explained that repairing the damaged circuits involved replacing about 300 distribution poles and 44 high-voltage transmission structures across the city.

Public outrage grew as the blackout stretched on, leaving residents without air conditioning, refrigeration, or operational traffic signals during a brutal summer heatwave. Emergency distribution points provided ice, bottled water, and non-perishable meals to families whose food supplies spoiled and whose medical needs were compromised. In response, Indiana Governor Mike Braun activated the Indiana National Guard to assist with disaster relief. Additionally, the federal government approved emergency disaster aid through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The financial strain on local households increased as residents spent hundreds of dollars on fuel for portable generators. Many traveled out of state to buy ice and batteries. Commercial businesses in Gary also faced severe disruptions. Small retail stores and grocery outlets had to shut down temporarily. Nevertheless, major industrial sites, such as U.S. Steel at Gary Works, continued essential manufacturing operations through localized power grid setups.

Leaders of civil rights organizations and local officials raised concerns about the fairness of the infrastructure recovery timeline, especially in lower-income communities. NiSource Inc., the parent company of NIPSCO, rejected accusations of uneven resource distribution. They emphasized that repair priorities were based strictly on the extent of physical damage. Utility managers also confirmed that hundreds of mutual assistance linemen had been dispatched from neighboring states to help speed up the grid rebuilding process.

Prolonged Power Outages Deepen Challenges for Local Small Businesses

As crews pushed toward complete restoration, state utility regulators announced plans to investigate utility tree-trimming practices and system maintenance policies. Atmospheric experts pointed out that the combination of wide-area straight-line winds and rain-saturated soil uprooted mature trees. These failures led to cascading outages along overhead power lines. The incident has reignited the national debate over grid modernization and the need to bury distribution lines in areas vulnerable to severe weather.

This disaster exposed ongoing weaknesses in municipal power distribution during extreme weather events. The situation remains unacceptable, with local leaders demanding long-term investments to prevent similar multi-week outages in future storm seasons. State regulatory agencies are expected to review the utility’s emergency response strategies and resilience standards over the coming months, aiming to improve infrastructure robustness and reliability for future emergencies.
