US Dollar Near Three-Month Lows as Treasury Yields Decline and Currency Markets React

WASHINGTON, D.C. / RankWire.AI / – On Thursday, the U.S. dollar hovered close to its lowest point in three months, driven by a decline in long-term Treasury yields. The dollar index was recorded at 98.813 against a basket of six key currencies, nearing the weakest level since mid-May. Meanwhile, the euro increased to $1.1676, reaching its highest since late May. Currency traders also analyzed recent U.S. Treasury measures along with minutes from the Federal Reserve’s latest policy meeting.

US dollar stays near three-month low as Treasury yields fall
US dollar trading remains in focus as Treasury yields ease and major currencies gain.

The Treasury Department announced plans to increase liquidity-support buybacks for longer-dated government debt on Wednesday. The maximum size of eligible operations will at least double, rising from $2 billion to $4 billion. This change applies to nominal coupon securities in the 10-year to 20-year and 20-year to 30-year ranges. The new larger-scale operations are set to begin on September 9 and will continue through November 4, which marks the end of the current quarterly refunding period.

Following the Treasury’s announcement, long-term U.S. government bond yields declined. The 30-year Treasury yield was around 5.184% on Thursday, after a significant drop during the prior session. Earlier in the week, the yield reached 5.337%, the highest since 2007. These yields impact borrowing costs across financial markets and can influence the dollar’s demand. The Treasury Department indicated that an updated tentative schedule for its buyback operations will be provided later.

Weakening dollar boosts major currencies in Asia

The decline in the dollar helped strengthen several major currencies during Asian trading. The Japanese yen appreciated to roughly 158.45 per dollar after approaching the notable 160 level recently. Sterling traded near $1.3604, close to a three-month high. The Swiss franc moved close to 0.7999 per dollar. The euro also stayed above $1.16 as the dollar index stayed below 99. These movements followed a broader decrease in the U.S. currency during the previous session.

Minutes from the Federal Reserve’s meeting on Wednesday showed ongoing concerns about inflation during the July 28 and 29 session. The Federal Open Market Committee kept its benchmark federal funds rate between 3.5% and 3.75%. Nine members supported maintaining the current range, while three members favored an increase of a quarter point. Officials also noted inflation remains above the Fed’s 2% target, even as U.S. economic activity continues to expand at a steady rate.

FOMC minutes highlight inflation risks and policy considerations

The minutes revealed that several policymakers were prepared to raise interest rates in July. Many members also suggested that higher borrowing costs could be necessary if inflation did not move toward the 2% goal. The Fed maintained its strategy of keeping ample reserves in the banking system and continued rolling over principal payments from Treasury holdings at auction. The central bank’s next scheduled policy meeting will take place on September 15 and 16.

Thursday’s dollar trading reflected the combination of decreasing long-term Treasury yields and recent signals from U.S. monetary policy. The dollar index stayed near its lowest point in approximately three months. Meanwhile, the 30-year yield remained below the 19-year high reached earlier this week. The expanded Treasury buyback operations will commence next month, while the Federal Reserve has kept its policy rate steady. These developments continue to be pivotal in shaping current trading behaviors of the U.S. dollar and government bond markets.
