OpenAI Implements GPT-5.6 Luna as the Default for Free and Go ChatGPT Versions Starting Next Week

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is broadening access to ChatGPT for Free and Go users by providing unlimited text interactions powered by GPT-5.6 Luna. The company announced that this change will take effect next week. It will be subject to safeguards aimed at preventing misuse. During the current rollout, GPT-5.6 Luna will be the default model for these users. Additionally, free users will get a Think button that allows the model more time to analyze complex questions before giving a response.

This unlimited access specifically pertains to text conversations within ChatGPT. Limits for file uploads, image creation, and other tools requiring extra processing will remain in place. The Think feature is set to launch next week along with the expanded text allowance. It enables Luna to spend additional time reasoning before delivering an answer. As a result, Free and Go plan users will enjoy broader access to the core chat service, though not unlimited use of all features.

GPT-5.6 encompasses Luna, Sol, and Terra, each tailored for different performance and computing requirements. Luna is positioned as the faster and more affordable option within this lineup. OpenAI noted that ChatGPT now reaches approximately one billion users weekly across various tasks such as search, research, planning, and writing. The latest update makes Luna the default experience for Free and Go accounts, while maintaining distinct usage rules for features outside normal text conversations.

Paid users benefit from enhanced GPT-5.6 Sol features

Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus and Pro now have access to an improved GPT-5.6 Sol for their daily interactions. Sol supports both quick replies and more in-depth reasoning within paid plans. The company stated that this updated model provides more targeted responses and avoids unnecessary details when a shorter reply suffices. Plus and Pro users will also get a reasoning slider available across web, mobile, and desktop. This feature lets subscribers control how much processing ChatGPT applies to tasks such as research, planning, writing, and coding.

Internal testing also indicated a decrease in factual errors with the newest models. These assessments involved prompts related to finance, medicine, and law that required detailed factual accuracy. Results showed about 62% fewer responses containing at least one factual mistake for GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant. GPT-5.6 Sol demonstrated an even greater reduction of approximately 68% under the same evaluation. The company also reported improvements in handling dates, figures, sources, rules, and assumptions that influence responses.

Safety measures are maintained across the expanded ChatGPT platform

The latest models feature enhanced protections for users identified as being under 18. The safeguards address areas such as romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, and claims that could substitute real-world relationships. Additional restrictions cover sexual content, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted goods, and graphic violence. The company also introduced new evaluations for responses involving younger users. Unlimited text conversations for Free and Go accounts will continue to operate within the platform’s existing safeguards against abuse.

This update primarily targets the main ChatGPT experience and does not alter all products that utilize GPT-5.6. The GPT-5.6 Sol versions used in ChatGPT Work and Codex remain unchanged with this update. Paid subscribers can now access the latest Sol model and reasoning controls. Meanwhile, Free and Go users are set to have Luna as their default model starting this week. Unlimited chats and the Think button will be available next week, with separate limits still applying to uploads, images, and other tools.
